Meet our Patient Advocates

Ms. Chauhan and Mr. Gavin are cancer patient survivors and are dedicating themselves to help raise awareness about melanoma research.


cynthia-chauhanMs. Cynthia Chauhan:  “I am a retired clinical social worker and survivor of two cancers who volunteers as a patient advocate to give back in gratitude for all that has been given to me. My interest is in bringing the patient voice and perspective to the research table and addressing the value of research in the community.”

Ms. Chauhan is also an active member of the following advocacy groups:

  • Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer SPORE
  • Academic and Community Cancer Research United
  • Hoosier Oncology Group
  • National Cancer Institute Patient Advocate Steering Committee

Additionally she serves on the following  committees:

  • FDA Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee
  • National Cancer Institute Symptom Management and Quality of Life Steering Committee
  • Patient Advisory Board of the Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups
  • Colon Cancer Solutions Board
  • Research Advocacy Network Board


partick-gavinMr. Patrick Gavin R.Ph : “In 2007 I was diagnosed with stage 4 pharyngeal cancer. A cancer clinical trial was part of a successful treatment plan. In December 2008, I was subsequently diagnosed with malignant melanoma. I am now lifelong cancer survivor.”

Mr. Gavin is also an active member of the following advocacy groups:

  • Alliance for Clinical Trials In Oncology (Chair of Patient Advocacy Group)
  • Grand Rapids Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP)

Additionally he serves on the following committees:
